Pre-Operative Instructions for Surgery

A nurse from the surgery center or hospital will contact you a few days before your surgery to discuss your surgery. Do not wear jewelry to the surgery center or hospital. You will be asked to remove all jewelry before surgery for your own safety.

Wear clean, loose fitting clothes that can be easily removed over the surgical shoe and bandage on your foot and ankle.

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANY FOOD OR WATER AFTER MIDNIGHT THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY. An empty stomach is necessary to avoid anesthesia complications.

Medications that you take on a daily basis should be taken with a small sip of water the morning of surgery. If you are diabetic, ask your doctor about how to take your diabetic medication.

Anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil (Ibuprophen), Aleve, Naprosyn (Naproxen), Feldene, Daypro, Relafen, Vioxx, Celebrex, etc. should be stopped 3 days prior to surgery. Aspirin should be stopped one week prior to surgery. These medications thin your blood and may cause excess bleeding.

Please notify your doctor if you are on any blood thinning medications such as Warfarin, Coumadin, Plavix, so that arrangements can be made to stop these medications before surgery.

Certain weight loss and diet medications need to be stopped at least 2 weeks before your surgery. Notify your doctor if you are taking such medications or supplements.
