Post Treatment Instructions for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy

Now that we have performed your procedure, we are very concerned with your prompt and complete recovery. In order to prevent possible complications and help you achieve the best results, we urge you to follow these instructions carefully.

ESWT is associated with minimal side effects or complications. You may notice a reddened or superficial discoloration of skin overlying the treated site. Some may experience mild tingling or a dull ache over the site for a short time, and occasionally there is pain sufficient to require pain - relieving measures. If pain is troublesome, you may wish to do the following.

  1. Rest and keep treated area elevated.
  2. Ice treated area 5-10 minutes every 6-8 hours as necessary.
  3. No anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) should be used.
  4. Continue to use orthotics.
  5. Full effects of treatment may not be realized for 6-12 weeks after the procedure. No excessive activity, athletic or otherwise during this period. This will allow the plantar fascia to heal.
  6. Call your physician if your foot or ankle is hot to touch or you have a pain that is not controlled with medication.

Mild discoloration and/or bruising along with some swelling at the treatment site are normal.

Please feel free to contact the office at any time should you have any questions or concerns. For your convenience, the doctor is available 24 hours a day by calling our office.

Wishing You a Speedy Recovery!!
